The Feel Good project

Feel Good is an anthology of stories about queer joy. It is a collection of eight stories that “explore the nuances of queerness through a Nigerian lens, imbuing each narrative with an air of hopefulness”. We collaborated with the team at Independent Arts (then wuruwuru studio) to publish Feel Good as a web book.

The challenge

Despite the anthology’s central theme of queer joy and hopefulness, each of the eight stories was very different from the others. We had to create a unifying identity for the anthology while catering to the authorial signature of each story. The producers had opted to publish Feel Good on the web to make the book more accessible, so it was also important for the book to be optimised for virality.

Designing a queer, joyful web book

We paired typography inspired by 20th-century grassroots queer publishing with illustrations based on story motifs and flowers, some native to Nigeria, to create a rich, unmistakable identity and website. We collaborated with illustrator Ifeoluwa Aminu to create modular and static illustrative elements to express the identity across different touch points.

I had worked with Null before, but this project was different as we were trying to publish a book (on the web), the team at Null went the extra mile to develop the identity and user experience for the book. We had a blast collaborating with them and are very happy with the final outcome.
