Radio Null Rewind 2022

The team at Null is very passionate about music. We swear by the tracks we listen to and believe the right playlist is integral to every productive work session. In 2022, we set out to build an annual retrospective site with the music we had listened to that year as the central theme.

We decided early on to use a brutalist, maximalist aesthetic for the site, building it around the monthly playlist collection we had curated throughout the year, along with other tracks we loved. We designed custom music players and an interactive navigation system that responded to the tempo of the music. These elements were combined with diary-style entries for each month, creating an immersive and dynamic experience.

The entire web audio experience was powered by Spotify’s APIs. We had to figure out a performant way to render the monthly playlists and songs picked by our collaborators without making too many API calls. We decided to fetch all of the playlist data at build time, saving us the need to make multiple API calls and leading to a smoother experience for visitors.

Like our efforts in 2023, making and publishing the site was a team effort. Thanks to Oluwafemi Fashikun and Oluwanifemi Adeyemi for helping with motion design and development, respectively. Also, big thanks to ROJTHEGOAT for providing the 3D renders on the site. This site was featured on Minimal Gallery and Httpster, amongst others. We also won the Awwwards Site of the Day, Honors, and Developer Award for this project.
